Joan考完學測後，大學成功通過第一階段篩選、用a英文又該得到面試機會，麼說寫完英文自傳的申請她，想請美國朋友Lian幫她過目。大學
Joan: Lian,用a英文又該 could you help me with my English personal statement?
Joan: Lian，你可以幫我看看我的麼說英文自傳嗎？Lian: Sure, are you going to apply for a job?
Lian: 當然可以啊，妳要應徵工作嗎？Joan: No,申請 it’s for applying to university.
Joan: 沒啦，這是大學要申請大學用的。Lian: You got some interviews?用a英文又該 Congratulations!
Lian: 妳得到面試機會了嗎？恭喜！Joan: Thanks! So I’m wondering, if you were the interviewer, what do you think of my personal statement?
Joan: 謝啦！所以我想知道假如妳是面試官，妳對我的自傳有什麼想法？(Lian reads through Joan’s personal statement⋯）
(在 Lian 看完她的自傳後⋯）Lian: There’s no grammatical errors. But I think you should emphasize your extracurricular activities more. That would make it much more persuasive!
Lian: 看下來沒有文法錯誤，但我覺得妳可以強調妳在課外活動中的成就，這樣會更有說服力！Joan: That’s a great suggestion!
Joan: 這建議不錯耶！
personal statement（n.）自傳
personal為形容詞，意思是「個人的」，而statement為名詞，表示「陳述」，何謂個人陳述？也就是申請大學或研究所時所需要的自傳。也可稱作application essay或statement of purpose。
Your personal statement is too lengthy—keep it short and simple!
妳的自傳太冗長了，簡短簡潔就好！
apply for / apply to（phr.）申請
apply有「運用；使用」之意，在本篇對話意為「申請；應徵」。apply for後面是加上「想申請獲得的東西」，比方說apply for a job、apply for a scholarship，那麼apply to後面所接的則是你所申請的對象或單位，例如：apply to XXX university。
My sister applied for a government loan to start her own business.
我姐姐請了創投基金要自己創業。
He applied to Harvard and was accepted.
他申請哈佛大學，也成功錄取了。
extracurricular activity（n.）課外活動
字首extra- 意為「額外的」，curricular是「課程的」，所以extracurricular activity就是「課外活動」，如參加社團活動等等。
Many companies like to recruit fresh graduates who participate in a lot of extracurricular activities.
許多公司喜歡雇用有課外活動經驗的社會新鮮人。
Joan和Lian兩人繼續聊了下去⋯⋯
Lian: So what else do you need to prepare?
Lian: 所以你還要準備哪些東西？Joan: I still need two recommendation letters and my transcript.
Joan: 我還需要兩封推薦信和我的歷年成績單。Lian: You should also enclose any certificates of merit that you have!
Lian: 妳應該也附上妳的獎狀！Joan: Oh yeah, almost forgot!
Joan: 噢對，差點就忘了！Lian: What do you want to major in?
Lian: 妳想讀什麼科系？Joan: English—but I’m a bit nervous about doing a whole interview in a second language.
Joan: 英文系，但我很害怕用外語面試。Lian: I can help you— let’s do a mock interview!
Lian: 我可以幫你，來模擬一下面試吧！
transcript（n.）歷年成績單
transcript為名詞，有「文字紀錄，文本」之意，另外也可以指「歷年成績單」，單學期的成績單則可用report card表示。
The company asked applicants to bring their college transcripts to the interview.
公司要求申請人帶著他們的大學歷年成績單來面試。
enclose（v.）附上
enclose的意思是以實體的形式「附上」，attach則是指「在電子郵件附上」，因此電子郵件的「附檔」稱為attachment，而實體的附件則可稱作enclosure。
I enclosed my volunteer certificate alongside my CV.
我在個人簡歷中附上志工證明。
certificate of merit（n.）獎狀
certificate是「證書；證明」，merit是「優點；功績」，所以certificate of merit就是指「獎狀」。
He lost all of his certificates of merit when moving house.
他在搬家時弄丟了全部的獎狀。
mock（adj.）模擬的
mock當動詞有「嘲笑；嘲弄」之意，當形容詞則是「假的；模擬的」，例如：mock exam（模擬考）、mock interview（模擬面試）。
Students have to take three to four mock exams this semester.
學生這學期要考三到四次的模擬考。
